Raptors News | Apr. 4, 2006
The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday they have signed point guard Andre Barrett for the remainder of this season and the 2006-07 season. We'll find out some contract details about next season over the next day. It's possible the deal is not guaranteed for next season until a certain date passes.
The Raptors signed the free agent to consecutive 10-day contracts March 15 and 25.
Barrett has appeared in nine games for Toronto, averaging 4.8 points and 2.9 assists in 15.9 minutes. He had a career-high 15 points March 31 versus Phoenix and a season-best seven assists April 2 versus New Orleans/Oklahoma City.
Barrett, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, is in his second NBA season. He was signed to consecutive 10-day contracts by Phoenix before being released March 14. He appeared in two games with the Suns, totaling nine points and two assists. He split the 2004-05 season between Houston and Orlando where he posted averages of 3.1 points and 1.4 assists in 36 games.
Prior to signing with Phoenix, Barrett was with the Florida Flame of the NBA Development League. In 33 games with the Flame, he averaged 17.0 points (11th in the league) and 6.6 assists (third overall in the D-League). He was named first-team All-NBA Development League.
Barrett was the top overall pick in the 2005 NBA D-League Draft after not being selected by an NBA team. He averaged 15.3 points and 5.4 assists in four seasons at Seton Hall.
InsideHoops.com Editor Says: Barrett will never be a star, but he's a good backup who gets the ball to the right people at the right times and can keep an offense going.
