The Portland Trail Blazers acquired the draft rights to guard Jerryd Bayless (11th overall pick), and forward Ike Diogu from Indiana in exchange for Jarrett Jack, Josh McRoberts, the draft rights to Brandon Rush (13th overall pick) and cash considerations, it was announced today by general manager Kevin Pritchard.
Bayless, 19, posted averages of 19.7 points (third in Pac-10), 2.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 83.9% from the free throw line and 40.7% from 3-point range in his lone collegiate season at the University of Arizona. The 6-3, 200-pound guard earned Second Team All-Pac-10 and All-Freshman Team honors, was an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention and was a finalist for the Wooden Award.
A 6-9, 250-pound forward, Diogu, 24, averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in 30 games for the Pacers last season. Originally selected by Golden State with the ninth overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft out of Arizona State, Diogu holds career averages of 6.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in three seasons with the Warriors and Pacers.
“We had a lot of flexibility heading into this year’s NBA Draft,” said Pritchard. “Ultimately though we only wanted to make moves that made our team better, both on and off the court. In acquiring Jerryd Bayless and Ike Diogu we think we achieved that. Bayless will make our backcourt more athletic. He’s a proven scorer and a tenacious competitor. In Diogu we have a young NBA player with a whole lot of potential that really helps fill a positional need for us. And, perhaps most importantly, both of these players fit our culture of character, hard work and winning attitudes.
“It’s also never easy to trade away players, especially ones who’ve played a significant role in helping us get to where we are today. That certainly was the case with Jarrett Jack, who started 99 games for the Trail Blazers these past three seasons. I want to thank and acknowledge him and Josh McRoberts for their contributions to the club. We wish both of them nothing but the best for their bright NBA futures.”
Jack, a 6-3, three-year veteran, has career averages of 9.0 ppg and 4.0 apg. He played all 82 games for Portland last season and started all 79 games he played in during the 2006-07 season. “I think this trade is definitely something good for me, coming here with a fresh start. This franchise is trying to go in a positive direction right now and I’m happy to be a part of it. Indiana came up as a team I might get traded to and it was a team I hoped to be traded to.”
Rush is a 6-6 swingman who played for Kansas’ 2008 NCAA championship team. In three seasons with the Jayhawks, he averaged 13.6 ppg. “I knew when I came to workout for the Pacers, they were pretty high on me, so when I was drafted and found out I was coming here, my reaction was big. I feel spending three years at Kansas and winning the national championship helped me to be NBA ready.”
McRoberts, a 6-10 forward, is from nearby Carmel, Ind. He played two seasons at Duke and played eight games with Portland last season, averaging 1.5 ppg. He played 15 games for Idaho in the D-League, averaging 7.7 ppg and 2.5 rpg. “I couldn’t be more happy to be coming back here and playing for the Pacers,” said McRoberts. “It’s a dream come true. I can’t even put into words how excited I was when I found out I was coming to Indiana.”
The Trail Blazers selected Rush out of Kansas with the 13th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
