New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Isiah Thomas announced today that the team has signed free agent center Kelvin Cato to a contact. As per club policy, terms of the deal are not announced.
Cato, 6-11, 275-pounds, has career averages of 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 523 career games with Portland, Houston, Orlando and Detroit. Originally selected by Dallas with the 15th overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft, Cato was traded on draft night to Portland where he played for two seasons before being traded in a seven-player deal to Houston for Scottie Pippen. Cato played for five seasons in Houston before being traded, along with Steve Francis, in a seven-player deal to Orlando for Tracy McGrady. After playing in 85 games over a season-and-a-half for the Magic, Cato was dealt to Detroit on Feb. 15, 2006, where he concluded the 2005-06 campaign.
