NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy
More Jeff Van Gundy info coming soon so check back.
NBA.com reports: Jeff Van Gundy joined the Houston Rockets as the 10th head coach in franchise history on June 11, 2003. In his first season with the Rockets, Van Gundy guided the team to its first playoff berth in five seasons. Following Houston’s 45-37 record last season, Van Gundy now possesses a career coaching record of 293-209 and has posted a winning record in each of his eight NBA seasons. Among coaches with 500 games of experience, Van Gundy ranks 14th in NBA history and fifth among active coaches with a winning percentage of .584. “Jeff Van Gundy is an all-around excellent coach who believes that a strong defense is key for a team to reach the championship level,” Rockets General Manager Carroll Dawson said. “He set franchise records for defense during his first season in Houston, and I look forward to watching him guide the Rockets in the seasons ahead.”

Van Gundy instilled a defensive mindset into last year’s Rockets, as the team set franchise single-season records for both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Rockets ranked second in the NBA with a field goal percentage defense of .412 and fifth in the league with a scoring defense of 88.0 points per game. Houston also set single-game franchise records for defense by holding Utah to 63 points on Jan. 3 and limiting Chicago to 21 field goals made on Nov. 3. “I think the only goal that is worthwhile in this league is to pursue a championship,” Van Gundy said. “You may not reach that every year, obviously, but you need to strive each year to be a championship-caliber team with championship-caliber players. That is what we are trying to do here – like they have in the past. Rudy Tomjanovich set the standard very high. I want to make sure I live up to that and build on the winning tradition that he established.”
