2024 NBA DRAFT NOTES: FIRST ROUND
June 26, 2024
• The Atlanta Hawks selected JL Bourg forward Zaccharie Risacher of France with the first pick in the 2024 NBA Draft presented by State Farm. He is the 15th international player to be selected with the top pick.
• With the selection of Risacher, it marks the first time in history that an international player who did not play basketball at a U.S. college was selected with the top pick in back-to-back years. Last year, the San Antonio Spurs selected France’s Victor Wembanyama with the first pick.
• Risacher of France is the son of Stephane Risacher, who won the basketball silver medal with France at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
• Risacher was the 2023-24 French League Best Young Player Award winner and 2023-24 EuroCup Rising Star Award recipient.
• The Hawks made the first pick in the NBA Draft for the first time since 1975, when they selected David Thompson.
• The Hawks had a 3% chance to win the NBA Draft Lottery, the fifth-lowest odds by a team to win the No. 1 pick since the lottery began in 1985.
• This is the second time in 15 years that a college freshman was not selected with the first pick in the NBA Draft. Before Victor Wembanyama in 2023, the last non-freshman to be selected first overall was Oklahoma sophomore Blake Griffin in 2009.
• The Washington Wizards made the second pick in the NBA Draft for third time in the common draft era (since 1966), selecting Perth Wildcats forward Alex Sarr. Washington’s previous selections at No. 2 were Earl Monroe (1967) and Wes Unseld (1968).
• Sarr spent the 2023-24 season with Perth as part of the NBL’s Next Stars program. He played two seasons for Overtime Elite (2021-22 and 2022-23).
• Sarr of France is the brother of Olivier Sarr, who finished the 2023-24 season on a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder and played collegiately at Wake Forest and Kentucky.
• The Houston Rockets picked third overall in the NBA Draft for the third time, selecting Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard. With the No. 3 pick, the Rockets selected Rodney McCray in 1983 and Jabari Smith Jr. in 2022.
• The Rockets have made a selection in the top four in each of the last four drafts, picking Jalen Green second in 2021, Jabari Smith Jr. third in 2022, Amen Thompson fourth in 2023 and Sheppard third in 2024. Prior to 2021, Houston’s last top-four pick was Yao Ming (No. 1 pick) in 2002.
• The San Antonio Spurs made the fourth pick in the NBA Draft for the first time in franchise history, selecting Connecticut guard Stephon Castle. Outside of No. 1 overall selections David Robinson (1987), Tim Duncan (1997) and Victor Wembanyama (2023), the Spurs previously made only one pick in the top four, selecting Sean Elliot with the third pick in 1989.
• Castle is the sixth UConn player selected in the top five in the common draft era, joining Donyell Marshall (1994), Ray Allen (1996), Emeka Okafor (2004), Ben Gordon (2004) and Hasheem Thabeet (2009).
• The Detroit Pistons made the fifth pick in the NBA Draft for the third consecutive year, selecting NBA G League Ignite forward Ron Holland II. The Pistons selected Jaden Ivey in 2022 and Ausar Thompson in 2023 at that spot.
• Holland led Ignite in scoring (19.5 ppg) and steals (2.38 spg) and was second in rebounding (6.7 rpg) in the 2023-24 season. He averaged 24.6 points in his final eight games with the Ignite this season.
• The Charlotte Hornets made the sixth pick in the NBA Draft for the first time, selecting Cholet Basket forward Tidjane Salaün of France.
• With the selection of Salaün, it marks the first time that three players from the same country outside of the U.S. were selected in the top 10 of the same draft. Zaccharie Risacher (1), Alex Sarr (2) and Salaün (6) join Victor Wembanyama (1st overall in 2023), Bilal Coulibaly (7th overall in 2023), Killian Hayes (7th overall in 2020) and Frank Ntilikina (8th overall in 2017) as French players selected in the top 10.
• Connecticut center Donovan Clingan was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the seventh pick. With the selections of Stephon Castle with the fourth pick and Clingan seventh, it gives UConn multiple lottery picks for the first time since 2012, when Andre Drummond went ninth and Jeremy Lamb 12th .
• Purdue center Zach Edey, who was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the ninth pick, is the school’s fifth first-round pick since the NBA went to a two-round draft format in 1989, joining Glenn Robinson (1994), JaJuan Johnson (2011), Caleb Swanigan (2017) and Jaden Ivey (2022).

• Crvena Zvezda guard Nikola Topić of Serbia, who was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 12th pick, became the highest drafted player from Serbia since Darko Miličić in 2003. Topić participated in the 2023 Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in Salt Lake City.
• Topić is the son of Milenko Topić, who won the basketball gold medal with Yugoslavia in the 1998 FIBA World Cup and the silver medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

• Providence guard Devin Carter, who was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 13th pick, is the third lottery pick in school history, joining Austin Croshere (1997) and Kris Dunn (2016).
• Carter is the son of Anthony Carter, who played 13 NBA seasons and is now an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies.

2023 NBA DRAFT RESULTS NOTES
The San Antonio Spurs selected Metropolitans 92 forward-center Victor Wembanyama of France with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft presented by State Farm. He is the 14th international player to be selected with the top pick and the highest-drafted French player ever.
San Antonio made the first pick in the NBA Draft for the third time in franchise history. San Antonio previously selected David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997) with the No. 1 pick.
In the Lottery era (since 1985), the Cleveland Cavaliers have made the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft the most (five times). The Orlando Magic is second with four such selections.
This is the first time in 14 years that a college freshman was not selected with the first pick in the NBA Draft. Before this year, the last non-freshman to be selected first overall was Oklahoma sophomore Blake Griffin in 2009.
This past season, the 19-year-old Wembanyama became the youngest MVP in French league history after leading France LNB Pro A in scoring, rebounding and blocks. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Year.
The Charlotte Hornets franchise made the second pick in the NBA Draft for fourth time in franchise history, selecting Alabama forward Brandon Miller. Charlotte’s previous selections at No. 2 were Alonzo Mourning (1992), Emeka Okafor (2004) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (2012).
Miller is the third top-five pick in Alabama history, joining Leon Douglas (No. 4 in 1976) and Antonio McDyess (No. 2 in 1995). Miller was the first player to win SEC Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Tournament MVP honors in the same season.
The Portland Trail Blazers picked third overall in the NBA Draft for the first time, selecting NBA G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson. It was their highest pick since selecting Greg Oden with the top pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.
Henderson is the seventh draft pick in the three-year history of NBA G League Ignite, joining Jalen Green (second overall), Jonathan Kuminga (seventh) and Isaiah Todd (31st) in 2021 and Dyson Daniels (eighth), MarJon Beauchamp (24th) and Jaden Hardy (37th) in 2022.
Henderson was the first player to sign with NBA G League Ignite for two seasons. He was ranked the No. 7 prospect by ESPN in the Class of 2022 before reclassifying to graduate high school a year early.
The Houston Rockets picked fourth overall in the NBA Draft for the first time, selecting Overtime Elite guard Amen Thompson. The Rockets made picks in the top three in each of the previous two years, selecting Jalen Green (No. 2 in 2021) and Jabari Smith Jr. (No. 3 in 2022).
The Detroit Pistons picked fifth overall for the second consecutive year, selecting Overtime Elite guard Ausar Thompson. The Pistons have made five picks in the top five in the Lottery era: Grant Hill (1994), Darko Milicic (2003), Cade Cunningham (2021), Jaden Ivey (2022) and [insert player] (2023).
With the selections of Overtime Elite guards and twin brothers Amen Thompson by the Houston Rockets with fourth pick and Ausar Thompson by the Detroit Pistons with the fifth pick, it marked the first time in NBA Draft history that two brothers were selected in the top 10 of the same draft.
Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson are the second pair of twin brothers to be selected back-to-back in the NBA Draft, joining Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris, the 13th and 14th picks in the 2011 NBA Draft, respectively.
Arkansas guard Anthony Black, who was selected by the Orlando Magic with the sixth pick, became the school’s first top-10 pick since Joe Johnson in 2001 (No. 10).
After not making a selection in the top nine from 1990-2021, the Indiana Pacers picked in the top seven for the second straight season, selecting Metropolitans 92 forward Bilal Coulibaly of France. Last year, the Pacers chose 2022-23 Kia NBA All-Rookie First Team selection Bennedict Mathurin with the sixth pick.
With the selections of Victor Wembanyama with the first pick and Bilal Coulibaly with the seventh pick, it marks the first time that two French players were selected in the top 10 of the same NBA Draft. Wembanyama and Coulibaly were teammates this past season with Metropolitans 92.
Houston forward Jarace Walker, who was selected by the Washington Wizards with the eighth pick, became the school’s highest draft pick since Hakeem Olajuwon was selected with the first pick in the 1984 NBA Draft.
The Wizards’ selection of Jarace Walker with the eighth pick is their highest pick since selecting Otto Porter Jr. with the third pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Central Florida forward Taylor Hendricks, who was selected by the Utah Jazz with the ninth pick, became the first player in school history to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft.
