Sixers exercise option on Andre Iguodala
InsideHoops NewsWire | Sept. 29, 2006
Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that the Sixers have exercised the team's fourth-year option on guard/forward Andre Iguodala's contract.
"Andre has shown the fans of Philadelphia his tenacity on the defensive end over the past two years," King said. "I think he will show them even more of his overall game and consistency this season and for many more to come."
A first round selection (ninth overall) by the 76ers in the 2004 NBA Draft, Iguodala has averaged 10.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.66 steals per game in 164 games (all starts). A First Team NBA All-Rookie Team selection following the 2004-05 season, Iguodala has shot 49.7 percent overall (613-1234 FG), 75.0 percent from the free throw line (419-559 FT) and 34.3 percent from three-point range (103-300 3FG). During his rookie season, Iguodala became the second rookie in franchise history to post a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists versus Detroit (3/23/05).
The 6-foot-6, 207-pound Iguodala was selected by the 76ers following his sophomore season at the University of Arizona. In two season he posted career totals of 594 points (9.6 ppg), 409 rebounds (6.6 rpg) and 95 steals (1.53 spg) in 62 career games (34 starts).
InsideHoops.com Editor Says: No surprise here. Every team with a really good player on a first-round rookie contract exercises the fourth year option on that player. As for Iguodala, I like his versatility and hope he continues to improve and doesn't level off.
