Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced that forward Antawn Jamison had an MRI today, which revealed that Jamison has a sprained left knee. Jamison will miss 3-6 weeks after sustaining the injury in the first quarter of Washington’s 104-99 victory against Detroit on Tuesday, January 30th. He will start his rehabilitation immediately.
“I’m obviously disappointed that this happened,” said Jamison. “We have been playing very good basketball as a team to put ourselves at the top of the Eastern Conference. I was really starting to get in a good groove, so it’s frustrating that I’ll have to miss some time, but injuries are a part of the game. It’s difficult for me because of the timing. Although I can’t be on the court for a few weeks, I have full confidence in my teammates to keep this going while I’m out. They played great against Detroit after I went out, and I know that we’ll come together as team to keep moving forward. I’m going to work hard to get back to full strength, and I’m looking forward to rejoining my teammates.”
In his ninth season in the NBA, Jamison is averaging 19.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game for Washington. He ranks in the Top 30 of the NBA in points per game (26th), rebounds per game (26th), steals per game (1.2, 27th), minutes per game (38.5, 13th), three-point field goals made (95, 8th) and three-point field goal percentage (.396, 24th).
“It is very unfortunate that this injury occurred,” said Grunfeld. “Antawn has been playing at an All-Star level, and with his production we’re in first place in the Eastern Conference, but I am confident that his teammates will step up and pick up the slack in his absence.”
“Antawn is having another exceptional year,” said Head Coach Eddie Jordan. “We certainly feel for Antawn, who has played a big part in our team’s success, but we have confidence in our players and we’ll look for others to step up when given the opportunity in Antawn’s absence.”
