Shawn Marion Interview
NBA Playoffs / May 23, 2005
The San Antonio Spurs beat the Suns 111-108 to take Game 2 of the 2004-05 NBA Western Conference finals. Here's what Phoenix forward Shawn Marion said after the game:
Q: Another game letting them back in during the fourth quarter. How do you explain that?
Shawn Marion: We didn’t get stops when we needed to. We had our chance there at the end, but when you’re relying on the last shot to try and get a win, normally that’s not going to play into your favor.”
Q: Obviously your backs are to the wall. Talk about having to go down to San Antonio.
Shawn Marion: Our backs are to the wall. The bright side of it is that we’ve got the best record on the road. We just have to go down there and try to get this done on the road.”
Q: Talk about the shots that Manu Ginobili made.
Shawn Marion: He hit some tough shots. I kept him in front of me—especially the last jumper he hit—and that was the shot that we wanted him to shoot, but he hit it.”
Q: Tell us how your defensive role was different from Game 1 to Game 2.
Shawn Marion: I started off on Nazr tonight. I think I was trapping Ginobili and Duncan, and then I was guarding everybody else. I’m just out there trying to help my teammates, trying to be active. They decided to put me off the ball tonight, not so much on Tim [Duncan] so I could be active and get in the passing lanes. And that helped. Coming from the weak side, getting some blocks, rebounds and pushing the ball.”
Q: How good is Bowen on defense? It’s the second straight game where he’s done a nice job defensively.
Shawn Marion: How are you going to say somebody guards somebody when you don’t have any plays? It’s easy to say he stopped me if I shot three for twenty, but the offense doesn’t go through me. It’s a lot easier to stop somebody when you don’t have to play any defense on them.”
