InsideHoops | Sept. 29, 2006
The Toronto Raptors announced Friday they have signed free-agent guard Darrick Martin. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. InsideHoops.com hears it's a one-year deal for the league minimum or possibly just slightly higher.
Martin, 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, averaged 2.6 points and 1.4 assists in 40 games for the Raptors last season. He scored in double figures on three occasions, and led the team in assists twice. He had a season-high 18 points and 12 assists March 14 at Philadelphia.
Martin is an 11-year NBA veteran who has seen action with Minnesota, Vancouver, the Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento and Dallas. He owns career averages of 7.3 points and 3.3 assists in 466 NBA contests. He recorded a career-best 38 points December 30, 1996 as a member of the Clippers and a career-high 13 assists January 19, 1999 in a Minnesota uniform. In 23 playoff appearances, Martin has averaged 4.0 points and 1.8 assists.
The Raptors will open training camp Tuesday at RIM Park in Waterloo. Their first preseason game is Monday, October 9 at Washington. The first home contest of the preseason will be Wednesday, October 11 versus Boston.
InsideHoops.com Editor Says: Darrick, whose name is not Derrick, is a backup's backup and worthy of the 10th-12th spot on a roster. He tries to be a leader and positive influence, knows his way around a basketball court and the locker room, and works hard to fit in. And he can give TJ Ford some guidance.
