NBDL BASKETBALL NOTES / THURSDAY, MAR. 31, 2005
MVP: The 2005 NBDL Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the league’s head
coaches, will be announced today.
NBDL QUIZ: There are three former D-Leaguers on the current Charlotte
Bobcats roster. One of them shares the NBDL single-game record for field
goals made with 19. Can you name him?
NBDL ALUMNI UPDATE…from Tuesday in the NBA
· The Wizards signed Damone Brown (Huntsville) to a second 10-day
contract
· 10 former D-Leaguers suited up in 11 NBA games.
BREATHING ROOM: Columbus jumped on center Mike Benton’s back and rode him
to win at Roanoke Wednesday, lengthening the Dragons lead over the
second-place Dazzle to 2˝ games. Benton scored 15 points, collected 10
rebounds and blocked four shots.
NOW BOARDING ALL ROWS: The Huntsville Flight has won six of its last seven
games.
STILL SLIDING: With three first-team All-NBDL players not in uniform,
Roanoke lost for the ninth time in 11 games Wednesday. Cory Alexander and
Matt Carroll are now Bobcats and forward Isiah Victor did not play for the
fourth straight game due to a hand injury.
J.T. AND ZIM: NBDL head coaches named Roanoke forward James Thomas as
Rookie of the Year on Wednesday and Columbus point guard Derrick Zimmerman
as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.
TODAY ON NBA TV: The NBDL “Game of the Week” show airs at 4:30 p.m. ET and
“This Week in the NBDL”, the D-League’s weekly magazine-style show, airs
live at 9 p.m. ET.
QUIZ ANSWER: Matt Carroll made 19 field goals while scoring 43 points for
Roanoke against the Florida Flame on February 9.

THE POSTSEASON: NBDL postseason semi-final games are set for Saturday,
April 16 at the arenas of the two highest seeds. The two winners will
advance to a sudden death championship game on Saturday, April 23 at the
gym of the highest remaining seed.
IF IT STARTED TODAY: If the annual one-and-done NBDL postseason started
today, Columbus would host Huntsville and Roanoke would entertain Asheville
in the semi-final games. Asheville currently holds the tiebreaker over
Huntsville for the #3 seed by virtue of a 5-3 season series edge. A
Columbus win at Roanoke today makes it even more interesting.
ALUMNI UPDATE…from Monday’s NBA games
· Rafer Alston (Mobile) scored 19 and had 6 assists in 39 minutes for
the Raptors
· Tierre Brown (Charleston) came off the Lakers bench to score 11 in 18
minutes.
· At least one former NBDL official worked in half of the games played
in the NBA Tuesday.
TOP YOUNGSTER: The 2005 NBDL Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the
league’s head coaches, will be announced today.
THE BIG ONE: The 2005 NBDL Most Valuable Player will be announced Thursday.
IN YOUR FACE: NBDL head coaches named Columbus point guard Derrick
Zimmerman as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Zimmerman will receive his award in pre-game ceremonies Saturday at the
Columbus Civic Center.
TUESDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
· Florida G Smush Parker scored 16 and dished out 12 assists.
· Fayetteville F Tang Hamilton scored 18 and collected 10 rebounds.
· Asheville F Ron Slay scored 28 points and had 9 rebounds.
· Huntsville C Earl Barron scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

FANNING THE COMMUNITY FLAME: With an assist from NBA Commissioner David
Stern, the Florida Flame will dedicate a new Reading Corner this afternoon
at the Southwest Florida Children’s Hospital. Flame players will also be
speaking at various Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings in Southwest
Florida elementary and high schools over the next three days.
ALUMNI UPDATE…from Monday’s NBA games
· 10 former NBDL players suited up for 11 NBA games on Monday
· Anthony Johnson (Mobile) had 12 points and 7 assists in 27 minutes
for Indiana
· Obinna Ekezie (Columbus) scored 10 and had 7 rebounds in 21 minutes
for the Hawks
· Jason Hart (Asheville) scored 8 and had 4 assists in 22 minutes for
the Bobcats
THE DEFENSE RESTS: The 2005 NBDL Defensive Player of the Year, as voted on
by the league’s head coaches, will be announced today. Former winners
include Karim Shabazz (Charleston, 2004), Mikki Moore (Roanoke, 2003) and
Jeff Myers (Greenville, 2002).
LATER THIS WEEK: The NBDL Rookie of the Year and the 2005 D-League MVP will
be announced on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
