Mike Sweetney Interview
By InsideHoops.com / Oct. 16, 2004
New York Knicks power forward Mike Sweetney is entering the second season of his NBA career. A short but wide post player, Sweetney, in limited playing time, was one of the NBA's best last season in rebounds per minute. This season, bigger things are expected from him. InsideHoops.com met with the non-verbose Sweetney for a quick interview prior to the start of the first Knicks home game of the preseason, in beautiful Madison Square Garden, against the San Antonio Spurs.
InsideHoops.com: How'd your summer go? What did you do?
Mike Sweetney: I worked out the whole summer, traveled to different places to work out, and played in the NBA summer league in L.A.
InsideHoops.com: And off the court, anything cool?
Mike Sweetney: Nothing really; just chilled at home, back in Maryland, spent some time with my family, and that was it.
InsideHoops.com: Talk about summer workout routines, if you did new stuff, different stuff, what you focused on.
Mike Sweetney: Just running, doing a little road work, running a couple miles, sometimes two-a-day, sometimes one-a-day.
InsideHoops.com: Did the Knicks give you a specific workout routine for the summer, or do you just make it up yourself?
Mike Sweetney: I just figure it out myself.
InsideHoops.com: I know Mark Aguirre has worked with you for a while now; what specific stuff does he try to teach you?
Mike Sweetney: Just showing me how to get great position down on the post and get the ball in the hope as easy as possible.
InsideHoops.com: Talk about the difference between getting position down low in college, vs. doing it in the NBA.
Mike Sweetney: In college you have to post up a different way; here you just gotta basically read defenses, it's all one-on-one. In college you get he ball and just try to rush and get to the basket before a triple or double-team comes, but here it's a different thing.
InsideHoops.com: Wanna project your stats for this season?
Mike Sweetney: (Laughs) Naw, I can't.
InsideHoops.com: You'll pass on that?
Mike Sweetney: (Laughs) Yeah, I'll pass on that.
