The Orlando Magic won the 2004 NBA draft lottery, which means they get the first pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. After the lottery, here's what Magic head coach Johnny Davis had to say to the media:
Q: Do you agree that the top two players are Howard and Okafor?
Johnny Davis: “Well based on what our scouts are saying, that’s true. Okafor I have heard a lot about. Howard, I have heard a lot about, and some others. So I would say that they are part of that top group of players.”
Q: Have you seen either of those two in person?
Johnny Davis: “No, I have not. I have not seen either one in person.”
Q: First thought in your head when you saw the Clippers at the two spot
Johnny Davis: “Euphoria. It is great knowing that we are going to have the number one pick. We’re setting the parameters for how the draft is going to unfold. We get a chance to pick the single best player that is available for the draft, and we get that selection, that is incredible, wonderful.”
Q: Any thoughts on who that might be or do you have to wait?
Johnny Davis: “We have to continue to process everything. I can’t say conclusively right now exactly who that player is, but we’ll do our homework and be ready draft night.”
Q: Will it be a tough choice to take or pass on a high school kid?
Johnny Davis: “Well again, we have to complete the process before we really know. You can’t say right now who that is, but you certainly can’t discount anyone.”
Q: Does this feel like winning a game?
Johnny Davis: “It’s a great feeling knowing that we have the number one pick, and needless to say it was a very difficult year for all of us, and certainly we didn’t want to wind up in this position, but here we are. So to get the number one pick is what it is all about at this point, and we got it.”
Q: You have watched all 82 games from the season like you said you would?
Johnny Davis: “I haven’t completely watched all of them, but I am working my way through them. Somehow it never seems to change.”
