INTRO TO EUROBASKET

The AP reports (September 6, 2009): The European basketball championships open Monday, and Spain is once again starting out as the favorite. The Spanish team enters with a squad laden with N.B.A. talent and the motivation to win a European title after losing in the final at home two years ago... Spain hosted the 2007 competition, only to be upset by Russia, 60-59, in the final... Russia begins its title defense against Latvia in Group B, but without Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who averaged 18 points per game and was the tournament’s most valuable player in 2007. In what could have been an intriguing matchup, France opens against Germany in the other half of Group B. San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker leads France, which will attempt to return to the podium after dropping to eighth place two years ago. Germany will be without its N.B.A. star, Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks forward.

INSIDEHOOPS.COM EDITOR PREDICTION

The obvious favorite is Spain and I see no reason why they won't win. The team is loaded with high-level, high-IQ players who have tons of experience playing together. They're able to play as a total team unit. This is their gold medal to lose. France is also worth watching as a solid underdog.

GREECE WINS EUROBASKET 2005

With no NBA players and a total team effort Greece beat Germany 78-62 to win the 2005 EuroBasket championship. The following player and team stats are unofficial: Papaloukas had 22 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals. Zisis had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Amazingly, Papadopoulos didn't score in the win. In the loss, Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and nine rebounds, but no assists and four turnovers. As a team, Germany shot 65.3% from two-point range, but hit just 3-of-16 threes. Greece shot 51.2% from two-point range, but nailed 7-of-21 three-pointers. Germany was a fantastic 19-of-20 on free throws. Greece won the assists battle 15-6. And Greece only committed eight turnovers, while Germany had 21. It's Greece's first EuroBasket championship since 1987.

In the 2005 EuroBasket finals, Greece will face Germany. The EuroBasket Final Four matchups were Greece vs France and Germany vs Spain. The final eight matchups were Greece vs Russia, Lithuania vs France, Slovenia vs Germany, Spain vs Croatia.

Lithuania finishes 5th. Slovenia finishes 6th. Croatia finishes 7th. Russia finishes 8th. Complete list of results.

Sept. 25: EuroBasket2005.com reports: "Just as they did 4 years ago in EuroBasket 2001, the Croatian national team finished the European Championship in 7th place after beating Russia 92-74 classification game for 7th-8th place on Sunday. The Russian side finished 8th for the second time in a row. Neven Spahija, Croatia's coach, rested Gordan Giricek and Marko Popovic for the entire game and missed the injured Mario Kasun and Zoran Planinic. But his youngsters didn't let him down. Croatia got big performances from Marko Tomas and Damir Rancic who scored 22 points each and shot a combined 10 of 18 from the three point line."

Sept. 25; EuroBasket2005.com reports: "Lithuania will go back home with the 5th spot in EuroBasket 2005 after beating Slovenia 79-70 in the 5-6 classification game on Sunday. Both teams will play next year in the World Championship in Japan 2006. Lithuania connected on 7 of of their 14 shots from behind the arc, while Slovenia struggled tonight from the same range with 3 out of 20. Sani Becirovic scored the game’s opening points, but that was to be Slovenia’s only lead. Robertas Javtokas and Ramunas Siskauskas had a great first half and combined for 22 points, almost half of what their team made and 4 less than the Slovenian total."

Sept. 24: Dirk Nowitzki finished with 27 points and had a clutch jumper with seconds left and a defender in his face to give Germany a 74-73 victory over Spain. Spain dominated the boards, but only shot 2-of-18 from three-point range, while Germany went 13-of-33.

Sept. 24: EuroBasket2005.com reports: "A three-pointer by Dimitrios Diamantidis three seconds from the end set off a thunderous celebration in the Belgrade Arena on Saturday night as the Greeks fought back from a seven-point deficit in the final minute to stun France 67-66 and advance to the gold medal game. France, closing in on appearance in the title game for the first time in six decades, self-destructed as both Tony Parker and captain Antoine Rigaudeau missed important free throws to leave the door open for a Greek comeback. After Rigaudeau made just one of two from the line with 11 seconds remaining, Greece inbounded the ball to Nikos Zisis who raced up the floor and towards the basket before kicking the ball out to Diamantidis who never hesitated when releasing his left-handed shot which hit the bottom of the net. France gave the ball to Rigaudeau who dribbled to midcourt and attempted to launch a desperation shot but guarded by Greece players, he was called for traveling as time expired setting off a joyous celebration from Greek players and thousands of their fans in attendance."

Sept. 24: EuroBasket2005.com reports: "Slovenia overcame a big early deficit to beat Croatia 89-80 and claim the final World Championship place still up for grabs at EuroBasket 2005. The Croatians lost a heartbreaker to Spain in overtime in their quarter-final on Friday and now they have suffered even more disappointment."
