Live from 2007 Orlando Magic Draft Night
By Woody Wommack | June 28, 2007
It was a long and uneventful night for the Orlando Magic as they waited almost four hours to make their first selection in the 2007 NBA draft. With the number 44 pick the Magic selected Reyshawn Terry, but quickly announced to the media at their draft night headquarters that they had traded Terry to the Dallas Mavericks for the 60th and final pick in the draft. With that pick the Magic selected Milovan Rankovic a power forward/center from Serbia. Rankovic averaged 12.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game during A1 League play last season.
Originally the Magic held three second round picks in the 2007 draft, but gave the number 37 pick to Miami for the right to hire Stan Van Gundy, and sold the number 54 pick to Houston just before the draft started. The Magic didn’t hold a first round pick because it was traded to Detroit along with Kelvin Cato in the 2006 trade for Darko Milicic and Carlos Arroyo.
Magic General Manager Otis Smith told the media after the completion of the draft that he felt adding more young players to one of the league’s youngest teams wasn’t the direction that he wanted to team to go in for next year.
Instead the Magic will now turn their sites to free agency, and Smith said the main need the Magic have is to add a legitimate scorer to the roster.
Locally in Orlando it's believed the Magic will target Seattle’s Rashard Lewis and perhaps Detroit’s Chauncey Billiups.
The free agency period officially starts Sunday morning at 12:01 a.m. For daily free agency and trade stories during the NBA off-season always read the InsideHoops.com rumors page.
