SEATTLE SUPERSONICS NEWS

Seattle Sonics Blog: Mavs beat Sonics
Sonics Basketball Game, Jan. 30, 2007

Dallas 122, Seattle 102 -- The AP reports: Dirk Nowitzki was off his game and Josh Howard was out for the birth of his first child, so Austin Croshere had to pick up the slack for the Dallas Mavericks. Croshere had a career-high 34 points and seven rebounds as the Mavericks beat the Seattle SuperSonics 122-102 on Tuesday night, stretching their home winning streak to 14 games... Jason Terry's 19 points, Greg Buckner's season-best 17 and Devin Harris' 16 helped the Mavericks set a season high for points and beat the Sonics for the ninth straight time. Ray Allen had 35 points, 19 in the first half, for Seattle, which tied a single-season club record with its 13th consecutive road defeat. Nick Collison and Earl Watson both had 15 points for the Sonics.

Seattle Sonics Blog: Sonics beat Cavs
InsideHoops.com, Jan. 17, 2007

Yesterday the Cavs lost to the Sonics 101-96. Cleveland started the usual -- Eric Snow, Larry Hughes, LeBron James, Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. LeBron took 21 shots for 30 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Big Z stepped up with 24 points and 11 boards. Gooden was OK. Everyone was was pretty weak. Meanwhile the Sonics started Earl Watson, Ray Allen, Mickael Gelabale, Chris Wilcox and Nick Collison, and got key bench minutes from Damien Wilkins and Luke Ridnour, and also Andre Brown and Johan Petro. Ray Allen needed 21 shots for his 22 points but he also dished 11 assists. Wilcox and Collison hit the boards hard. Seattle got more across-the-board scoring. Both teams were awful from outside.

Seattle Sonics Blog: Sonics keep Brown around
Sonics News, Jan. 15, 2007

Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced today that the team has re-signed forward Andre Brown to a second 10-day contract.

Brown has appeared in four games for the Sonics since joining the team on Jan. 5, averaging 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Brown tallied a career-high eight points vs. New York on Jan. 5 and recorded a key block in overtime of the Sonics 122-114 victory over Utah on Jan. 12.

Seattle Sonics Blog: Saer Sene to D-League
Sonics News, Jan. 10, 2007

Seattle Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced today that the team has assigned center Mouhamed Sene to the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League. Sene, the 10th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, has appeared in 16 games for the Sonics this season, averaging 0.9 points and 1.1 rebounds in 4.9 minutes per game.

Sene is the first Sonics player to be assigned to the D-League since the current affiliation system began during the 2005-06 season. Under the system, NBA teams can assign up to two players who are rookies or in their second season to their D-League affiliate. Players can stay with the D-League team for as long as the team wishes, and be recalled back to the NBA at any time. However, a player can only be sent to the D-League a maximum of three times during the season.

The Stampede, the D-League affiliate for the Sonics and the Utah Jazz, are coached by Bryan Gates, who worked as an assistant under Sonics legend and current head coach of the Austin Toros Dennis Johnson last season. Idaho will play 10 more games during the month of January, beginning with a back-to-back set against the Bakersfield Jam tonight and Friday.

Seattle Sonics Blog: The upcoming week
Sonics News, Jan. 8, 2007

This Week’s Opponents:

Phoenix: The Sonics and Suns will meet just three times this season after splitting four games last season. The second meeting last year, a 152-149 Sonics win in Phoenix on 1/22/06, was the most memorable, as a deep Ray Allen three at the buzzer gave Seattle the double-overtime victory. Allen finished with a season-high 42 in the game. The three-point shot was the storyline of all four meetings, as the teams combined to attempt 234 treys in the four games, an average of 58.5 per game. The Sonics have won at least one game in Phoenix in each of the last six seasons but trail the Suns 109-84 all-time.

Miami: The Heat will make their lone KeyArena appearance of the year this week as the Sonics look to avoid a sweep after falling 90-87 in the first meeting. The first meeting came to the buzzer, as James Posey’s three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining game Miami the lead and Damien Wilkins’ attempt to tie at the horn rattled off the back rim. The Heat are riding a franchise-record three-game winning streak against the Sonics but are just 3-15 all-time in games played in Seattle. The Sonics lead 25-11 in the all-time series.

Utah: Seattle and Utah will meet for the third time already this season, with the Jazz having won the first two matchups. In the most recent meeting, a 109-107 Utah victory in Salt Lake City on 12/2/06, the Sonics rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the lead in the closing minutes before a Mehmet Okur three-pointer with 1.6 seconds remaining gave the Jazz the victory. The Sonics lead the all-time series 77-62 and have won six of the last 10 meetings at KeyArena.

This Week in Sonics History: On Jan. 12, 1971, Lenny Wilkens became the first Sonics player to earn MVP honors at the All-Star Game after leading the West to a 108-107 victory. Wilkens scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting to help halt a three-game skid by the West in the league’s midseason classic.

Kilbreath to Fill in as PA Announcer: Local radio personality Stephen Kilbreath will be filling in for Sonics PA Announcer Matt Pitman at this Friday’s game vs. Utah. The KUBE news director will be making his third appearance behind the microphone for the Sonics. Kilbreath served as the PA Announcer for the Storm during the team’s first six seasons of play at KeyArena.

Seattle Sonics Blog: Andre Brown signed
Sonics News, Jan. 5, 2007

Sonics General manager Rick Sund announced today that the team has signed forward Andre Brown to a 10-day contract. The 6-9 forward, who played his college ball at DePaul University, began the season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA D-League.

Brown has averaged 22.8 ppg (first in D-League) and 10.8 rpg (second in league) while shooting a league-high 63.4 percent from the field in 16 games for the Skyforce this season. Brown was recently named D-League Player of the Month for December after averaging 23.3 ppg and 11.2 rpg in 13 games during the month.

We figure he's got a decent shot at being signed for the rest of the season. Tough call.

Seattle Sonics Blog: Two Cuts Made
By InsideHoops.com, Jan. 4, 2007

Team has requested waivers on guard Desmon Farmer and center Andreas Glyniadakis. Farmer, originally signed as a free agent on Oct. 2, 2006, appeared in eight games for the Sonics this season, averaging 1.6 points and 1.1 assists per contest. Glyniadakis signed with Seattle on Nov. 5, 2006 and appeared in 13 games, averaging 1.3 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. The Sonics roster now stands at 13 players.

It was expected that the Sonics were going to cut one or both of those guys, with Mike Wilks being safe out of the fringe guys with nonguaranteed contracts.

We'll be updating Seattle Sonics news and this Sonics blog regularly all season.
