December 6, 2007: The New York Post reports: The PSAL began its league basketball schedule yesterday - but still doesn't know whether its championship game will be back in Madison Square Garden following last year's melee in the stands during the final between Lincoln and Boys & Girls. It's clear that Garden executives are waiting to see how this season goes before making any decisions. So far, so good - for the most part.
December 3, 2007: Info on the upcoming Big Apple Basketball Challenge, featuring games between top Catholic League vs. Public League games. The event is at Baruch College on East 24th and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, New York. The dates are Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9.

These rankings are valid through August of 2006
1. Curtis Kelly (Sr.) 6-9 Rice – The Uconn-bound center is the best big man in the city. His footwork is second to none. To excel on the next level, however, Kelly will need to hit the weights and increase his stamina.
2.Edgar Sosa (Sr.) 6-3 Rice – Sosa has the speed and the range to play with any guard in the country. He’s just the type of guard Louisville needs.
3. John Mitchell (Sr.) 6-8 Florida – Mitchell’s body and footwork has improved to the point where he might make an impact his freshman year at Florida. His jumper could use a little wortk, though.
4. Larry Davis (Sr.) 6-4 Christ the King – This smooth operator who’s headed to N.C. State has a great midrange jumper and knows how to win. All he needs is a mean streak.
5. Malcolm Grant (Sr.) 6-0 Robeson – Few guards in the tri-state area can shoot with Grant. Grant, a four-year varsity letterman is leaning toward St. John’s.
6.Jamine ‘Greedy” Peterson (Sr.) 6-6 Boys & Girls – Arguably the best finisher in the city, Peterson patrols the paint like a 7-footer and can’t be stopped one on one.
7. Lance Stephenson (Fr.) 6-4 Lincoln – He’s only a freshman, but he is smooth and his skill is unmatched. He can do everything. But his left hand needs work.
8. Rashad Green (Sr.) 6-3 St. Mary’s – The younger brother of North Carolina forward Danny Green is as fundamentally sound as they come. His range could use improvement.
9. Brian McKenzie (Sr.) 6-3 Xaverian - Although slowed by a bad ankle, McKenzie is still one of the city’s top shooting guards with unlimited range. Improving his in between game will help him excel at Providence.
10. Stephen Wood (Sr.) 6-4 McClancy – Wood, McClancy’s all-time leading scorer is another do-everything guard. He has great range and can play both guard positions.
11. Justin Burrell (Sr.) 6-8 Our Savior Lutheran – Burrell, who verbally committed to St. John’s, has been an absolute terror in the paint this season.
12. Nathaniel Lester (Jr.) 6-4 Canarsie – Lester’s midrange game is as good as it gets. He’s also a great finisher. His ball handling skills could use some improvement.
13. Devan Ebanks (Jr.) 6-8 Bishop Loughlin – He’s 6-8 but he has the skills of a shooting guard. If Ebanks can add some meat to his frame, he could be the best in the city next year.
14. Sylvan Landesberg (So.) 6-4 Holy Cross – No Sophomore has had quite the impact Landesberg has. He’s another one of the city’s swingmen who has a great midrange game. The stronger he gets the more unstoppable he will become.
15. Alejo Rodriguez (Sr.) 6-8 Mt. St. Michael – The Iona-bound center is one of the city’s best defensive players. Offensively, if he continues to develop his 15-foot jumper he could make an impact in the MAAC next season.
16. Tyrone Nash (Sr.) 6-7 Lawrence Woodmere – Nash’s can match any player’s leaping ability. He’s also great in the paint and can finish with authority.
17. Anthony Stukes (Sr.) Banneker – Stukes is one of the best long-range shooters in the city. The fact that he’s a true point guard makes him that much more of a prospect.
18. Patrick Foley (Sr.) 6-0 St. Anthony’s (L.I.) – Few point guards in the area run the show as well as Foley does. The 6-foot Columbia-bound senior is one of the best to ever play for the Friars.
19. Wayne Turner (Sr.) 6-0 Grady – No one penetrates and dishes in traffic as well as Turner. His jumper is inconsistent, but he’s a streaky shooter who can explode when he gets on a roll.
20. Andre Tarver (Sr.) 6-3 Wings – Playing in the Bronx for a relatively unknown school has obscured Tarver a bit. But there’s no doubt the Manhattan-bound shooting guard is the real deal.
21. Mike Coburn (Jr.) 6-0 Mt. Vernon – A starter since his freshman year, Coburn is a pure point guard who knows how to win.
22. Kashif Pratt (Sr.) 6-3 Rice – Playing in the shadow of Kelly and Rice has limited Pratt’s exposure. But he’s one of the city’s top gunners.
23. Darryl Crawford (Sr.) 6-2 All Hallows – Crawford’s range and great quickness have made him tough to stop.
24. Malik Boothe (Jr.) 5-10 Christ the King – His on-the-ball defense and playmaking have gone unmatched.
25. Milan Prodanovic (Sr.) 6-1 PG Molloy – The Iona-bound point guard can shoot the lights out.
26. Rob Hampton (Sr.) 6-3 SF Christ the King – Hampton’s a great athlete who could’ve played football in college also.
27. Kevin Menner (Sr.) 6-6 SF Lincoln – The Railsplitters’ top post player, Menner has played in the shadow of Stephenson.
28. Austin Wallace (Sr.) 6-9 PF Lasalle – Wallace is still raw, but he has the talent and potential to be a primetime player at Pittsburgh.
29. Dwight Hardy (Sr.) 6-1 SG John F. Kennedy – Hardy has been a one-man show this year. Scoring 40 points is just a drop in the bucket for him.
30. Rasheem Jenkins (Sr.) 5-11 SG Wings Academy - Jenkins’ game up to this point has been just to shoot. But he’s a better ball handler and passer than people think.

May 11, 2005: NYC point guard Edgar Sosa (Rice) is going to Louisville.
May 5, 2005: The New York Daily News reports: Former St. Raymond's basketball coach Gary DeCesare, who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Richmond, was named associate head coach at DePaul. DeCesare accepted the position on new DePaul coach Jerry Wainright's staff after being one of Wainright's assistants at Richmond since the 2002-2003 season. "DePaul has a great tradition and I think we'll really do well," said DeCesare, who was said to be in the mix for the vacant Richmond head coaching position had he not headed to Chicago.

Jan. 3, 2005: A big PSAL game is coming up. On Tuesday, Grady visits Lincoln. Lincoln's Kevin White used to play with Grady, but he transferred to Lincoln, and this is the first time he's going up against his former team. Both of these teams are undefeated in their division.... UPDATED: Lincoln won. Kevin White started the game off forcing the issue a bit, but then settled down and helped teammates make it happen.
Dec. 25, 2004: Any student who is ejected from a PSAL game, as a result of two technical fouls or otherwise, will receive a minimum two(2) game suspension.

CHSAA adds 35-second Shot Clock

The CHSAA (Catholic High School basketball in New York) has hadded a 35-second
shot clock, reports the NY Post. THis is just for CHSAA AA, not the lower levels
of the CHSAA. And according to the NY Post, the PSAL is not currently planning
on following suit and adding a shot clock. They'll continue to go without.

IS8 championship
May 24, 2004
The 2004 IS8 championship, which took place in Queens, New York was Juice All-Stars
vs. Mount Vernon. The entire game was close. At the end of the first quarter it
was the Juice All-Stars up, 13-22. At halftime, Mount Vernon led, 42-41. At the
end of three it was Juice with a 63-61 lead. But Mount Vernon's defense in the
fouth quarter carried them to victory. The final score was Mount Vernon 91, Juice
All-Stars 81. Mount Vernon's Jonathan Mitchell was too big and strong for Juice
to handle. He scored 33 points and was named MVP. Vernon's Dexter Gray stepped
up as well, blocking 6 shots. He had 14 points and 8 rebounds. For the Juice All-Stars,
Eugene Lawrence scored 23 points, almost all of which came in the first half.
Corey Fisher had 19.
How Mount Vernon and Juice All-Stars got to the championship: In the semi-finals,
Mount Vernon beat Bingo's All Stars (AJ Price scored 25 points, Derrick Caracter
only had 7) by a score of 76-72. And the Juice All-Stars beat the Playaz Club,
104-98.

Nets are still trying to negotiate an evential team move to the middle of Brooklyn,
and create the Brooklyn Nets But it'll take time. Years, in fact. If the new ownership
group can't pull off a move to Brooklyn, their second option would be to move
the team to Newark. But they really, REALLY want the Brooklyn Nets to exist.

ABA Basketball team comes to Harlem, New York

The ABA basketball league, which has expanded like crazy
for next season, has added a team in Harlem, NYC. The team is owned by President
and Founder Wray M. Wade, who runs a sports and entertainment marketing agency.

Mount Vernon beat Lincoln for the NY state basketball
championship by a score of 66-52.

2004 NYC PSAL Championship
March, 2004
Lincoln beat Cardozo 74-65 in Madison Square Garden to
win their third straight PSAL championship. For Lincoln, Sebastian Telfair scored
17 of his 25 points in the second half. Lincoln's Eugene Lawrence finished with
14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 0 turnovers and was named MVP of the game.

2004 NYC PSAL Final Four
March, 2004
The 2004 PSAL basketball final four took place at St.
John's University. Lincoln beat Grady and Cardozo beat Sheepshead Bay.

2004 NYC CHSAA Final Four
March, 2004
The 2004 CHSAA basketball final four took place at Fordham
University. The Xaverian Clippers beat Rice by a score of 59-44. In the other
game, the St. Raymond Ravens beat the Bishop Loughlin Lions.
So, in the 2004 CHSAA championship, Xaverian will face
St. Raymond.
