LAST SEASON'S WOODEN WATCH PLAYERS, FEB 2006
The Wooden Watch, from the John R. Wooden Award group, presents college basketball player ratings based on the best players between January 17 and February 14, 2006. Basically, these are the top college basketball players in that time period -- in no particular order:
J.J. Redick, Duke - (Sr, Guard): Have you seen this guy over the last month? The Blue Devils are undefeated in the ACC and have been Redickulous …after putting up a game-high 41 points in Duke's loss to Georgetown, the Senior posted 40 points on 8-of-10 3-point shooting in an 82-63 victory against Virginia…followed it up with 28 points and five boards in an 83-81 win versus Boston College…threw down a game-high 36 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists in a win against Florida State…put up another MVP performance in an 87-83 win against rival North Carolina…pitched in 35 points including a barrage of jumpers from all angles in the second half…received ACC Player of the Week (2/13) for the fifth time this season…is currently leading the nation in scoring.
Adam Morrison, Gonzaga - (Jr, Forward): Depending on the day Morrison is either the nation's leading or second leading scorer; regardless, he continues to prove impossible to guard as the Zags have won 12 in a row…threw down a game-high 41 points and nine rebounds in an 84-75 win at San Francisco…hit 5-of-7 from downtown…contributed another 40+ night in the next game versus Portland… racking up a game-high 42 points and five rebounds …continued his tear by posting a game-high 34 points in an 80-76 win versus San Francisco…contributed 34 points including 12 in the last three minutes to seal Gonzaga's victory over Stanford…ranks second in the nation in free throws made (168) and is shooting 45 percent from 3-point land.
Rodney Carney, Memphis - (Sr, Forward): Memphis won all of its games over the last month and has reeled off 12 victories in a row thanks to the Senior…put up a team-high 20 points to go with four rebounds in a 91-81 win versus Marshall…followed it up with a game-high 26 points in a 94-61 win against South Florida…connected on 5-of-6 3-pointers…added 22 points and seven boards in an 88-79 non-conference win over a solid Tennessee team…hit 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc…ranks second in Conference USA scoring (18.1 ppg) and is shooting 41 percent from 3-point land.
Rudy Gay, Connecticut - (So, Forward): Despite dropping Monday's game to No. 4 Villanova, Gay and UConn had claimed victory in 11 straight games…posted 20 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 66-50 win against St. John's…pitched in 22 points and four steals in an 80-76 win verusus Pittsburgh…contributed 19 points and 12 boards in an 88-80 win at Indiana…hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc…put up a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds in UConn's loss to Villanova…again connected on 3-of-4 3's…has recorded five double-doubles this season…leads the team in scoring (16.1 ppg) and steals (1.9 spg).
Allan Ray and Randy Foye, Villanova - (Sr, Guards): When two teammates are playing this well it would be unfair to cut either from the Wooden Watch Top 5. Therefore each of Villanova's super Senior Guards. After all, Nova has won nine games in a row including Monday's victory over No. 1 UConn. Foye ranks second in the Big East in scoring (20.0 ppg)…contributed 20 points and five boards in an 80-65 win versus Syracuse…scored 24 of Villanova's 49 total points in a 49-46 win at South Florida…added a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds in a 61-51 win at DePaul…connected on four 3-pointers. Ray ranks fourth in the Big East in scoring (18.9 ppg) and is shooting 91 percent from the foul line…put up a game-high 22 points and eight boards in Nova's win over Syracuse…posted 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a 72-70 win at Notre Dame…hit 4-of-6 3's…pitched in a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds in a 79-73 win versus Louisville…connected on 5-of-8 3-pointers…finished the month with a game-high 25 points, three steals and was the difference in the win over UConn…hit 5-of-10 3's.
