MARCH 23, 2005: THIS WEEK'S NOTES ON WOODEN AWARD FINALISTS

Andrew Bogut So. 7'0" Forward/Center Utah --- Big Bogut had a pair of outstanding games as the Utes advanced to the Sweet 16…the center put up game highs of 24 points, 11 boards and four blocks in a first round victory over UTEP…connected on 2-of-3 shots from downtown…followed it up with a stellar all-around performance in a 67-58 win against Oklahoma…recorded 10 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high seven assists in the win over the Sooners.

Dee Brown Jr. 6'0" Guard Illinois --- Brown helped Illinois cruise to the round of 16…the junior tallied 19 points in a 67-55 win against Fairleigh Dickinson…recorded four rebounds and five assists in a second round victory over Nevada.

Taylor Coppenrath Sr. 6'9" Forward Vermont --- Coppenrath put up two solid games to help the Catamounts upset Syracuse before falling to Michigan State…the senior recorded 16 points and four rebounds in the upset of the Orangemen...ended his college career with 16 points and 14 boards in a 72-61 loss to MSU.

Ike Digou Jr. 6'8" Forward Arizona State --- DNP

Francisco Garcia Jr. 6'7" Forward Louisville --- Garcia had two of his best games at just the right time to push the Cardinals to the semis of the Albuquerque regional…threw down a game-high 27 points to go along with four assists and three boards in a first round win over Louisiana-Lafayette…continued his hot play in a 76-54 victory against Georgia Tech…put up a game-high 21 points.

Ryan Gomes Sr. 6'7" Forward Providence --- DNP

Joey Graham Sr. 6'7" Forward Oklahoma State --- Though OSU rolled through the first two rounds to advance to the Sweet 16, Graham recorded less than stellar numbers as a result of sitting on the bench during stretches of both games due to foul trouble…the power forward put up seven points and two boards in a first-round ‘W’ against SE Louisiana…followed it up with eight points and six assists in an 85-77 defeat of Southern Illinois.

Luther Head Sr. 6'3" Guard Illinois --- Head provided an offensive lift for the Illini in two tourney victories…tallied 13 points and five assists in a 67-55 victory against Fairleigh Dickinson…ended the week with 14 points, four boards and three assists in a victory over Nevada.

John Lucas Sr. 5'11" Guard Oklahoma State --- Lucas helped carry the offensive load to keep the Cowboys dancing…recorded 12 points in a first-round victory over SE Louisiana…followed it up with 17 points and four rebounds in a 12-point ousting of upset-minded Southern Illinois.

Sean May Jr. 6'9" Forward/Center North Carolina --- May is playing out of sight for Carolina…the center averaged a double-double in two early tourney blowouts…put up 19 points and eight boards in a win against Oakland…ended the week with game highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds in a 92-65 thrashing of Iowa State…added three steals.

Rashad McCants Jr. 6'4" Forward North Carolina --- McCants continues to put up big numbers following his injury…recorded 16 points on 4-of-6 3-point shooting in a win over Oakland…finished the week with 17 points and four assists in a thumping of Iowa State.

Chris Paul So. 6'0" Guard Wake Forest --- After sitting out Wake’s ACC tourney loss to NC State, the sophomore put up huge numbers in the Demon Deacons two tourney games…led the team in four major statistical categories in a first-round win over UT-Chattanooga…put up 20 points, six boards, five assists and two steals…continued his crazy play with 22 points, nine assists and six rebounds in a thrilling double-overtime loss to West Virginia.

J.J. Redick Jr. 6'4" Guard Duke --- With his usual flawless jumper off the mark, the star guard was forced to set up his teammates to help the Blue Devils advance…Redick put up seven points in a first round win against Delaware State…followed it up with 16 points and five assists in a squeaker over Mississippi State…came up with a crucial steal with under a minute and a half to play to help put the Dukies on top.

Lawrence Roberts Sr. 6'9" Forward Mississippi State --- The one-time Baylor transfer ended his college career with a bang by taking out Stanford and challenging Duke…Roberts recorded game highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds in a 93-70 win against Stanford…finished the tourney with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-55 loss to Duke.

Nate Robinson Jr. 5'9" Guard Washington --- Did anyone watch the Pacific game? If so, how quick and agile is Robinson? Tallied nine points, five assists and four rebounds in a first-round win against Montana…finished the week with a great game in a victory over Pacific to push UW to the Sweet 16…recorded 23 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Wayne Simien Sr. 6'9" Forward Kansas --- Simien wrapped up his college career with a solid double-double in Kansas’ surprising first-round loss to Bucknell…finished with game highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the heartbreaking 64-63 loss…his game-winning shot attempt at the buzzer came up short.

Craig Smith Jr. 6'7" Forward Boston College --- Smith played the role of another star who, despite putting up solid performances, was kicked out of the dance following an upset…recorded 15 points to go along with game highs of 13 rebounds and seven assists in an 85-65 win against Pennsylvania…ended his college career with a game-high 25 points in BC’s 83-75 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Salim Stoudamire Sr. 6'1" Guard Arizona --- After spraying the Pac-10 with 3-pointers, the guard is now destroying tourney teams with his long distance bombs...put up 17 points in a first round win against Utah State...followed it up with 28 points on 5-of-11 3-point shooting in a lopsided win over UAB.

Ronny Turiaf Sr. 6'10" Forward Gonzaga --- Despite his two double-doubles, Turiaf and the Zags were taken off the dance floor a little earlier than expected…the big man tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds in a first-round victory against Winthrop…added four swats…finished the season with another 13 point, 13 rebound game in a 71-69 loss to Texas Tech.

Hakim Warrick Sr. 6'8" Forward Syracuse --- Warrick put up a valiant effort but couldn’t help Syracuse advance past the first round…threw down game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 60-57 first-round loss to Vermont.

Deron Williams Jr. 6'3" Guard Illinois --- We can’t forget about the Illini’s other guard…Deron had eight points and six assists in a first-round win…followed it up with 15 points, 10 assists and four rebounds to help Illinois oust Nevada.

Shelden Williams Jr. 6'9" Forward Duke --- Shelden came up big to keep the Blue Devils dancing…the big forward recorded 14 points, 11 boards and four blocks in a win over Delaware State…ended the week with 13 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks in a victory against Mississippi State.

Kennedy Winston Jr. 6'6" Forward Alabama --- The man with two first names (or is it two last names?) put up his usual all-around numbers despite the Tide dropping out in the first-round…recorded 20 points, four rebounds and four assists in an 83-73 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
