WOODEN WATCH TOP WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Finalists, updated March 19, 2005:

Seimone Augustus Jr. 6'1" Guard LSU ----- Poured in a team-high 20 points to go along with six boards in a one-point win over Alabama…marked her 55th straight game scoring in double figures…followed it up with a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds in a 79-65 win over Georgia…continued her tear with a team-high 23 points in a two-point loss to Tennessee in the conference tourney…named the SEC Player of the Year.

Jacqueline Batteast Sr. 6'2" Forward Notre Dame ----- The Big East Player of the Year led the Irish to two wins before going down to UConn in the conference tournament…recorded 11 points and six boards in a 41-35 win against Seton Hall…followed it up with 16 points and five rebounds in a 70-59 win against West Virginia…the scoring output moved her into the top 10 on the single-season scoring list at Notre Dame…put up 10 points, six boards and a season-high four steals in the loss to Connecticut.

Steffanie Blackmon Sr. 6'2" Forward Baylor ----- The senior ended her Big 12 career with a bang to lead Baylor to the conference tournament championship…put up 17 points and seven boards in a win over Texas Tech…the victory clinched Baylor’s first ever Big 12 regular season title…put up 10 points and nine boards in her next outing in a win against Missouri…followed it up with 15 points and six rebounds in another victory against Texas Tech…finished the four-game stretch with seven points and a season-high 14 rebounds in a 68-55 win over Kansas State…was named to the All-Big 12 tourney team.

Lindsay Bowen Jr. 5'7" Guard Michigan State ----- The 5’7” junior took the Spartans to the Big 10 tourney title…recorded 11 points and three dimes against Illinois…added 10 points in a second round victory against Penn State…finished the tourney with 10 points and three assists to win the conference tournament…her 428 points this season ranks 15th best in MSU history…her play helped State secure a No. 1 seed in the Kansas City region.

Monique Currie Jr. 6'0" Guard/Forward Duke ----- The ACC Player of the Year led Duke to the conference tournament championship game before falling to UNC…tallied 16 points along with three rebounds and three assists in a first round thrashing of Wake Forest…continued her solid play in a win against Maryland with 13 points and eight rebounds…finished the ACC tournament with 26 points and five boards in a loss to Carolina…named to the all-tournament team.

Jessica Davenport So. 6'4" Center Ohio State ----- Tallied a game-high 18 points to go along with two swats and two steals in the Buckeyes’ 70-46 win over Wisconsin…followed it up with a double-double in a overtime loss to Minnesota…finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds…marked her 11th double-double of the season…named Big 10 Player of the Year.

Sandora Irvin Sr. 6'3" Forward TCU ----- Poured in game highs of 18 points and seven blocks in TCU’s 65-57 victory against USF…added game highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds in a win over DePaul…rebound total for the year broke her own single-season record…finished the run with another dominating performance…recorded game highs of 21 points, nine boards and six steals to vault TCU to the conference tourney title…was named Conference USA Tournament MVP and Player of the Year.

Tiffany Jackson So. 6'3" Forward Texas ----- Jackson put up solid numbers during Texas’ run in the Big 12 tournament…put up 14 points and eight boards in a 69-57 win against Texas A&M…added two blocks and two steals…chipped in game highs of 25 points and seven steals in a win over Oklahoma…finished the two-week stretch with nine points and four assists in the semifinal loss to Kansas State…was named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

Temeka Johnson Sr. 5'3" Guard LSU ----- Along with Augustus, Johnson helped LSU amass a 2-1 record over the last two weeks…tallied 10 points and five rebounds in a win over Alabama…added 11 points and a school-record 17 assists in a victory over Georgia…finished the stretch with 13 points and 12 assists in a loss to Tennessee…was named to the All-Tournament Team and the All-SEC team.

Janel McCarville Sr. 6'2" Center Minnesota ----- Averaged a double-double in three conference tournament games…contributed an all-around effort to topple Purdue 71-88…tallied eight points, 12 rebounds and seven assists…followed it up with a huge performance in an overtime thriller against Ohio State…poured in 21 points, 15 boards and seven assists while holding fellow Wooden Award nominee Jessica Davenport to just 12 points…marked her 13th double-double of the season…finished the tourney collecting 12 boards in a 54-49 loss to Michigan State…was named to the All-Big 10 First Team.

Cappie Pondexter Sr. 5'9" Guard Rutgers ----- Cappie’s eight points helped vault Rutgers over Villanova in its final regular season game to capture the schools’ first regular season Big East title…threw down 15 points including a key basket with under two minutes to play to oust Villanova in the Big East tourney semis…ended the tourney with 19 points and four steals in a championship game loss to UConn…snapped Rutgers’ 10-game winning streak…was named to the All-Big East First Team.

Khara Smith Jr. 6'2" Forward DePaul ----- Smith was named to the Conference USA First Team and showed why in two recent games…recorded game highs of 23 points, 15 rebounds and five steals in a 78-55 win against Memphis…marked her 20th double-double of the season…put up 19 points and 11 boards in a loss to TCU in the Conference USA tourney.

Kendra Wecker Sr. 5'11" Forward Kansas State ----- Wecker propeled K State to the Big 12 championship game…recorded her 50th career double-double with 26 points and 10 boards in an 80-53 win against Missouri…put up a game-high 19 points in a win over Nebraska…the scoring outing pushed her to the top spot on the Big 12 all-time scoring list…followed it up with 17 points and seven boards a win over Texas in the semis…finished the tourney with 14 points and 16 rebounds in the championship game loss to Baylor…the 16 boards moved Wecker into third place on the Big 12 all-time rebounding list.

Tan White Sr. 5'8" Guard Mississippi State ----- Tan had a massive outing in the Bulldogs one game over the two-week stretch…White recorded, get this, team highs of 38 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks in a 80-73 loss to Arkansas…marked her fourth 30+ point game this season…of course she was named to the All-SEC Team.

Candice Wiggins Fr. 5'11" Guard Stanford ----- The freshman was at it again as the Cardinal took the Pac-10 conference tourney…tallied 10 points, eight boards and four assists in a win over Cal…marked Stanford’s first unbeaten season at home…put up her third double-double of the season with game highs of 24 points and 12 boards in a 73-69 win against USC…finished the tourney with a game-high 16 points and seven boards to led Stanford to the tourney championship…was named the tourney MVP and was also named the Pac-10 Player of the Year…first freshman to win the honor.

Tanisha Wright Sr. 5'11" Guard Penn State ----- Wright put forth two solid game despite the fact Penn State was bounced in the second round of the Big 10 tourney…recorded 17 points, seven assists and five boards in a 68-66 victory against Iowa…ended the tourney with 12 points and six assists in a loss to Michigan State…was named an All-Big 10 selection.

Sophia Young Jr. 6'1" Forward Baylor ----- Young added some punch to help Baylor cruise to both the regular season and conference tourney Big 12 titles…tallied 15 points and 12 boards in the Bears’ regular season finale versus Texas Tech…followed it up with a game-high 18 points and a team-high nine boards in a win over Missouri…added 18 more points to go along with a game-high 13 boards in a second win over Texas Tech…and yes, put up ANOTHER 18-point performance in the Big 12 tourney championship versus Kansas State…was named the Big 12 tourney MVP.
